Univ. Fr. Brad is a New Englander, born in Manchester, NH. He made
his profession of vows in the Conventual Franciscan Order in 1978
and was ordained to the priesthood in 1981. Fr. Brad's ministry
has included service as a teacher and administrator in our two Franciscan
High Schools (Baltimore, MD and Athol Springs, NY), Director of
Studies for the Friars of the Franciscan Province of St. Anthony
of Padua, Catholic Campus Minister at the Catholic University of
America (Washington, DC) and most recently as a missionary at the
Franciscan Mission at St. Mary above Rocks in Jamaica, West Indies.

weekend's readings
19th Sunday
in Ordinary Time
August 8th
First Reading:Wisdom 18:6-9 In this excerpt, the Israelites
are reminded that they were warned before God sent an angel to slay
the first born of the Egyptians. God called on them to have courage,
and then rewarded them by punishing their enemies and leading them
from captivity.
Second Reading: Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 Faith is described
as true belief even toward things we cannot see. Abram's faith in
God was so deep that he wandered through a foreign land, convinced
God's promise of a homeland was sincere. God honored his promise
to give Abram many descendants, and was proud of the deep faith
Abram and his people possessed.
Gospel: Luke 12:32-48 Jesus encourages us to be prepared
for his return at all times, for he will come when we least expect
him. He tells of a master who entrusts his home to his servants,
and fully expects them to be awaiting his return. In the same manner,
Jesus can arrive at any moment and expects us to be prepared for
his return.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY
by Rev. William J. Reilly
19th Sunday inOrdinary Time- August 1, 2010
Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich,
one's life does not consist of possessions. Then he told them a
parable. 'What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?'
And he said, 'This is what I shall do; I shall tear down my barns
and build larger ones…' Thus will it be for all who store up treasure
for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.” We can,
or we should fill in the verses which are not cited above, for we
probably have something of the rich man in all of us. The parable
applies to every aspect of our life. Some years ago a teacher reminded
us that the people who came to the New World came for Glory, Greed,
Gold and the Gospel. The story of the days of discovery reveal this
as true. Today, the gospel mandate of Jesus is a good reminder.
We have all been blessed with an abundance. How true this is. Even
when we seem to struggle, look around. Nearby the unemployed, uninsured,
homeless can and should speak to our hearts. The resources of our
world are consumed by a small percentage of the world's population.
We are the consumers. We plough crops under, provide subsidies for
not working the land, while others starve. Pope Benedict constantly
reminds us of the need of the common good. As a gesture of my own
awareness in response to this parable, think of one thing you can
do without this week, and make sure someone benefits because of
my awareness. In this way the parable takes on real meaning.

RCIA
Interested in the Catholic faith? Have questions about
Catholicism? Curious about the Catholic way of life? RITE OF CHRISTIAN
INITIATION OF ADULTS (R.C.I.A.) “Seek the Lord while He may be found;
Call upon Him while He is near.” The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(RCIA) is a catechetical program developed on the premise that conversion,
the coming to faith, is an ongoing process. In addition, while recognizing
that this coming to faith is a lifelong journey, there are significant
events in our lives which, when reflected upon and shared, can become
experiences of grace and growth for all concerned. The Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults serves as a wonderful opportunity for adult non-Catholics
who would like to be initiated into the faith, for those who have already
been baptized but lack the other sacraments, for those who seek to know
more about their faith, and for those who simply want to rediscover the
Good News within a friendly, warm and loving Eucharistic community. In
other words, RCIA has something for everyone! If you would like to join
us on this faith journey, or if you would like additional information,
or if you know someone else who would be interested in participating in
this process, please contact Deacon John at 743-5337.
