Next weekend's readings
18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 1st

First Reading:Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23 "Vanity of vanities." Sometimes we may work for wealth, wisdom and knowledge only to discover that it has been left for some one who did not toil for it. The offering of our work, fatigue and pain, if not for God, can also be a kind of vanity.
Second Reading: Colossians 3:1- 5, 9-11 Paul urges us to seek what is good and from God, encouraging us to put our minds on the spiritual. He reminds us that, as Christians , we have died with Christ and are hidden with Christ until his glory is once again revealed. We are all one in Christ.
Gospel: Luke 12:13-21 On being requested to settle a question of inheritance, Jesus heeds us to beware of all covetousness because our life does not consist on the wealth of possessions. Through the lesson of a parable Jesus reinforces this teaching, explaining that those who store up the treasures of wealth and possessions are not the richest in God's eyes.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY
by Rev. William J. Reilly

17th Sunday inOrdinary Time- July 25, 2010
And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and the one who knocks, the door will be opened… If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”… “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples'… 'He said to them, 'When you pray say…'” As this time of the year weekends find us at the beach, nearby lake or backyard pool. We watch the children with swim rings, boogie boards, learning how to handle the water. They do not learn standing beside the pool or on the beach. They have to dive right in. Prayer is no different. We learn to pray by praying. Surely we can learn different forms of prayer, as there are different ways of moving in the water. We can speak our prayer, sing our prayer, or silently meditate. It is the way we address our God. There are two key elements. We learn first that when we pray we are responding to an invitation God has already offered us. Secondly, we remember who it is we are in dialogue in prayer. We speak, He listens. But don't forget, every conversation allow the Other to speak, and we quietly listen. Choose the form of prayer which best meets your need and your situation, but and know that God always hears our prayer, for He knows us even before we begin. He wants us to recognize our need and our dependence upon Him. 'When you pray say…'

RCIA
Interested in the Catholic faith? Have questions about Catholicism? Curious about the Catholic way of life? RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (R.C.I.A.) “Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.” The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a catechetical program developed on the premise that conversion, the coming to faith, is an ongoing process. In addition, while recognizing that this coming to faith is a lifelong journey, there are significant events in our lives which, when reflected upon and shared, can become experiences of grace and growth for all concerned. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults serves as a wonderful opportunity for adult non-Catholics who would like to be initiated into the faith, for those who have already been baptized but lack the other sacraments, for those who seek to know more about their faith, and for those who simply want to rediscover the Good News within a friendly, warm and loving Eucharistic community. In other words, RCIA has something for everyone! If you would like to join us on this faith journey, or if you would like additional information, or if you know someone else who would be interested in participating in this process, please contact Deacon John at 743-5337.
