WELCOME
We extend our warmest welcome to all visitors who have joined us for today's Eucharistic Celebration! Why not bring someone to Church with you next weekend to introduce them to our wonderful, welcoming, forgiving, and loving Lord Jesus… and to our warm, friendly parish family of Sacred Heart of Jesus!

If Mass is being offered for your intention and you would like to bring up the gifts of bread & wine to the altar, please see the usher before Mass begins.

Christmas thoughts and prayers
The Christmas season this year is celebrated from December 24 until Jan 10.We offer these thoughts for your reflection during the week and this prayer for use at the table each day this week before the evening meal:
January 10th - The Baptism of Our Lord
Christmas Thought:

Jesus was baptized into His mission of revealing the Father to us and bringing us back to the Father. Our Baptism into Jesus is Baptism into His mission. It is our privilege to reveal the face of the Father to others and to lead others back to God. Do you know someone who's been away from the Church? Why not extend an invitation to them to join you next week in the House of the Father?
Christmas Prayer:
Father, through the waters of Baptism You have made us Your children in Jesus, Your Son. Keep us, who have been born of the Spirit, faithful to Your call. May others see Your face in ours. May they hear Your invitation to come to You in our invitation to come to Church with us. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen

Next weekend's readings
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5
Isaiah prophesizes that Jerusalem will again be held in high esteem by God. He states that all nations will witness its glory. He compares a groom's joy toward his bride to the joy that God will feel toward Jerusalem.
Second Reading:
I Corinthians 12:4-11
Paul discusses the different gifts and talents bestowed upon different individuals. He explains that each individual receives various talents so that everyone can contribute something to society.
Gospel: John 2:1-11
Jesus and Mary attended a wedding where Mary informed Jesus that there was no more wine. At first he said it did not concern him, but then he turned several jugs of water into wine. His disciples were also present, and believed in him more strongly after they witnessed the first sign of glory he revealed to them. ©2000 Bon Venture Services, Inc

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY
by Rev. William J. Reilly
BAPTISM OF THE LORD January 10, 2010
“I take it you know what has been reported all over Judea about Jesus of Nazareth, beginning in Galilee with the baptism John preached; of the way God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and power.  He went about doing good works and healing all who were in the grip of the devil, and God was with Him”… “You are my beloved Son. On you my favor rests.” Peter used a gathering in the home of Cornelius to give a profound talk and teaching. In a few short words he tells of Jesus' call, mission, His giftedness with the spirit and power or grace.  Because of these attributes, He launched His mission of teaching, healing and doing good works. Rather than stating that He is the Son of God, Peter indicates that God accompanied Him. The mission of Jesus has moved from Galilee to an entire world. Others have been chosen to continue His ministry. In this 'year of the priest' we acknowledge the unique role in continuing this same work of Jesus, most especially in providing the Eucharist. Yet the preaching, teaching, healing, all the good works are part of the life of our church and are the responsibility of all the baptized.  When we observe the life of the church today providing education, health care, family support and all the corporal works of mercy, we discover the mission of Jesus at work among us. As Peter described the life and times of Jesus, may we observe how this same mission continues today. May we see our role in continuing the work of Jesus, going about 'doing good works.'

Each week they put straw into the manger as a symbol of the prayers and good works they had done during the week. By Christmas the manger had a soft bed of hay to keep Jesus warm. Our children reminded us of how to use the Advent Season to prepare a place for Jesus in our hearts. Boys and girls- THANK YOU. You really showed us grown-ups how to get ready for Christmas.

RCIA
Interested in the Catholic faith? Have questions about Catholicism? Curious about the Catholic way of life? RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (R.C.I.A.) “Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.” The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a catechetical program developed on the premise that conversion, the coming to faith, is an ongoing process. In addition, while recognizing that this coming to faith is a lifelong journey, there are significant events in our lives which, when reflected upon and shared, can become experiences of grace and growth for all concerned. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults serves as a wonderful opportunity for adult non-Catholics who would like to be initiated into the faith, for those who have already been baptized but lack the other sacraments, for those who seek to know more about their faith, and for those who simply want to rediscover the Good News within a friendly, warm and loving Eucharistic community. In other words, RCIA has something for everyone! If you would like to join us on this faith journey, or if you would like additional information, or if you know someone else who would be interested in participating in this process, please contact Deacon John at 743-5337.

The Outreach Ministry
needs help! We are looking for volunteers who are willing to commit to a regular schedule of either helping prepare a main course ahead of time, or working at the Dorothy Day Hospitality House on the first Sunday of each month from 1 to 5PM. If you are willing to commit some time and effort to help your parish in this evangelical endeavor, please contact Dennis Fischer at 744-4660.

REMEMBERING THE DEAD “...the church...from the very earliest days of the Christian religion has honored with great respect the memory of the dead; and, 'because it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins” (2 Maccabees 12:46) she offers her offerings for them.” From “The Dogmatic Constitution on the church “ of the Second Vatican Council November, in our Roman Catholic tradition, is the month set aside for remembering the dead- especially our deceased love ones.
Therefore, November is an appropriate time to share how deceased members of your family and friends can be remembered here at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. The following possibilities are available throughout the year, to make an offering of the repose of the souls of the deceased: At the time of death, it is appropriate that the Rites of the Church for the deceased be celebrated. Our Catholic ritual usually consists of a Vigil of Prayer before the funeral (wake), the Mass of Christian Burial with the person's body or remains present, and Committal (burial in the earth or placement of remains in a crypt). Sometime before each new calendar year begins the members of the parish can make requests to have Mass offerings accepted in memory of the deceased during the upcoming year.
Memorial donations can be made to the parish to honor someone who has died . These donations are published in the bulletin and a card acknowledging the gift is given to the donor to present to the family of the deceased. Larger donations are memorialized with a memorial candle.
Votive lights have been and continue to be a beautiful symbol of our constant prayers for those who have died. Offerings for votive lights may be made to have a light lit for one, three, six or twelve months.
At the time of someone's death it is a tradition to make Mass offerings with a Mass card in memory of the deceased. Additionally, before each new calendar year begins anyone can make requests to have Mass offerings accepted in memory of the deceased during the upcoming year.
Similarly, an offering may be made for the Bread and Wine used at any Mass in memory of a deceased person. Envelopes for this offering can be found in the foyer of the church.
Offerings in memory of the deceased can also be made to support Franciscan missionaries. The deceased, who are enrolled in the Franciscan Mission Association, are remembered in Masses in Assisi, the home of St. Francis, and around the world. At the time an offering is made a card is given to the donor to present to the family of the deceased.
Weekly Flower Memorials are also available. The flowers that adorn the altar each week can be in memory of a loved one.
CALL THE PARISH OFFICE TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR ANY OF THE ABOVE MEMORIALS

How do YOU wish to be remembered? You have probably seen death notices in the newspaper that said, “in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church”

How would YOU like to be remembered at the time of your death? Perhaps now is the time to indicate to your family how you would like to be remembered. Perhaps you might wish to consider including Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in your will as a way of thanking God for the good He has done for you in this life.

Pray for the Dead
Finally, and most importantly, remember to pray for those who have died- especially those members of your family who made it possible for you to be here and enjoy this life. And remember to pray for yourself as well- that one day you may be reunited with all those whom you have loved during your pilgrim journey here on earth.

Don't forget the Living! Celebrate a birthday; Mark an anniversary; Pray for someone's' health and healing; Offer thanks for blessings received… These are some good reasons to offer a SPIRITUAL GIFT for someone.

MARCH FOR LIFE, WASHINGTON, D.C., FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2010:
It is most imperative that we continue our Pro-life activities on behalf of the unborn children. The “March for Life” at our Nation's Capital will serve as witness and as advocacy seeking the protection and overall respect for every unborn child in the progression to birth. Scientifically and religiously, we know the truth that it is a human life, a person, who is conceived within a woman. Clearly, then, we must at all times continue to stand up and speak out for the overall respect for the unborn children. We must always pursue the protection and total well-being of the unborn person with the same commitment and compassion that we pursue these rights for the born person. We ask you, our parishioners, to join others from the Diocese and participate in this "March." Our diocesan groups will travel to Washington, D.C. via buses. Buses will depart from various locations in Fairfield County to Washington, D.C. at 12:15 A.M., and they will depart from Washington, D.C. for Connecticut at 4:00 P.M. The cost per person: $45.00. For more information and to place a reservation: please call Mimi Giannino, 203-416-1444, or  email mgiannino@diobpt.org. The deadline for both a reservation and a nonrefundable payment is  Monday, January 12, 2010.

Saint Peter-Sacred Heart School
From the Principal's Desk,Magi came from the East bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for the Newborn King…” Blessings to you all as we begin the New Year 2010! Advent was our time to stop and renew our relationship with God's only Son, Christmas, a season to rejoice and enjoy God our Father sending us His son and now Epiphany a time to put into practice the lessons of love God has given to us. Reflecting on the above gives us the opportunity to share and go forth in joy as we celebrate January, Catholic Schools Month! This year 2010 Saint Peter-Sacred Heart School celebrates three years as a viable, growing merger in the Diocese of Bridgeport. We also celebrate 125 years of Catholic Education for Saint Peter Campus, the Mother School in Danbury and over 83 years of Catholic Education at Sacred Heart School, the little school with the biggest of hearts in Danbury - total amount over 200 years of Catholic Education in the City of Danbury, Connecticut. While it is true you have been presented with these same numbers quite a few times before, it is also true we often need to be reminded of the overwhelming impact, these two schools, now One, have had on our church with vocations to religious life, our Country with military leadership, political offices and especially our Senator Michael McLachlan, Professional Educator, Doctors and Lawyers. We continue our celebration while realizing oh, so many changes in our Church and our Community, Neighborhood and City and yet the constant, continuous, consistent need for our Catholic School. It is through the spiritual growth, academic excellence and physical growth that our school Saint Peter-Sacred Heart will continue making its mark in our Church, Nation, World and City. What do we need? We need you to pray for our continuance, we need you to give Catholic Education a chance in your life, the lives of your children and grandchildren. Next week we will present “Safety.” An excellent reason for choosing Catholic Schools, followed by specific dates of celebration and welcome, followed by parent and student encounters. January and February are indeed months of wonderful happenings!
